ROY SURETTE – Outgoing Artistic Director

Born in Vancouver and a proud graduate of Studio 58, Roy kicked off his busy, fun-filled professional career in the early 80s as the Associate Director for Carousel Theatre and later Western Canada Theatre in Kamloops. During this time, he was also a founding director of Burnaby Summer Theatre. In 1984, he succeeded John Cooper as Artistic Director of Touchstone Theatre where, inspired by the company’s provocative work, Roy embraced championing the creation and dissemination of bold Canadian plays and directed many award-winning productions including Whale Riding Weather, Lion in the Streets, Lilies, (with Sandhano Schultz) When We Were Singing, El Crocodor, Lost Souls and Missing Persons, The Three Penny Opera, A Map of the Senses and The Number 14.

In 1997, Roy became Artistic Director for Victoria’s premier company, The Belfry Theatre, directing over twenty-five plays including Mary’s Wedding, Flying Blind, Homechild, A Perfect Ganesh, and The Girl in the Goldfish Bowl. After a successful 10-year tenure, Roy donned snow boots and became Artistic & Executive Director of Montreal’s flagship English language company, Centaur Theatre (2007 -2017 ). While there, he directed many acclaimed premiere productions with box office hits including Schwartz’s: The Musical, Last Night at the Gayety, The St. Leonard Chronicles and Triplex Nervosa. In 2017, Roy returned to Touchstone Theatre following Artist Director Katrina Dunn’s esteemed tenure. Recent Touchstone credits include Happy Place, Kill Me Now, Certified, and YAGA.

Roy has directed for the National Arts Centre, The Shaw Festival, Canadian Stage Company, Vancouver Playhouse, Arts Club, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Prairie Theatre Exchange, Alberta Theatre Projects, Theatre Calgary, Axis Theatre, Manitoba Theatre For Young People, The Kay Meek Centre, Realwheels, Ruby Slippers, The Globe in Regina, The Comedy in Melbourne, The Kings Theatre in Glasgow, UBC, University of Victoria, Canadian College of the Performing Arts and Studio 58.

LOIS ANDERSON – Artistic Director

Lois Anderson has won multiple awards as a Vancouver-based theatre deviser, director, and actor. She received the Jessie Award for Best Direction for her adaptation of Pericles at Bard on the Beach, and the 2019 Critic’s Choice Award for Innovation for her adaptation of Lysistrata. Lois was an original creative member of Cirque Poule, The Leaky Heaven Circus, Neworld Theatre’s inaugural show Devil Box Cabaret, and Flying Blind which workshopped and toured in Australia and Canada (Legs on the Wall Australia, The Belfry, The Arts Club, ATP, and Axis Theatre.) Lois has been an Artistic Associate with the NAC, Runaway Moon and Leaky Heaven, focusing on theatre that develops community engagement. Additional directing credits include: Lysistrata, Henry V, My Granny The Goldfish, The Unplugging, Fun Home, BUFFOON, Peter Panties (with Steven Hill), Medea, Timothy Findley’s The Wars, Iphigenia at Aulis, CHILDISH, Gertrude and Alice, and You Used To Call Me Marie. Lois directed the NAC Grand Acts of Great Hope film entitled Siiye’yu which documented the site-specific collaboration of Coast Salish performance company Tsatsu Stalqayu and Mortal Coil. She directed the film Transcendence, based on the writings of Anosh Irani for Indian Summer Festival 2021. With Quelemia Sparrow she wrote Lysistrata and Camas Lilies, which was awarded the Nathan Cohen Award for Critical Essay. Lois has received Canada Council funding for Jane Jacobs: Seven Audience Experiments with Maiko Yamamoto and Joanna Clark, which focuses on urban planning and city development.

Daniela-Atiencia

DANIELA ATIENCIA – Artistic Associate

Daniela Atiencia is a Latinx-Canadian theatre artist born and raised in Colombia. She has a BFA in Theatre Performance from SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts and holds an MFA in Theatre Directing from The University of Essex’s East 15 Acting School. Daniela works as a freelance bilingual director, dramaturg, and deviser. She is currently working on two plays as co-director for Neworld and Green Thumb Theatre. As dramaturg she is collaborating with Tetsuro Shigematsu’s latest commissioned piece for Pacific Theatre and served as Spanish Language Dramaturg for Made in Canada, an agricultural podcast for rice & beans theatre. She is currently based on the Unceded Territories of the Coast Salish peoples (Vancouver, B.C.) and her work recently earned her a finalist spot in the RBC Rising Star Emerging Director award.

She freelances under the company name Orange Pulp focusing on video media storytelling.  Kat holds an MA in Liberal Studies from Simon Fraser University.
